On 2018 August 26th, a book entitled “Kapustin -Opening the new door of piano music-” written by a pianist Masahiro Kawakami was released.
Concluding first, as one of Kapustin’s fan, I say this is a MUST-READ book. This is, as far as I know, the very first book ever that explores who Kapustin is, what he thinks, and how his music has been constructed, and how pianists should play his music, including important fingering tips and expression like when we should swing or not.
The most interesting part for me was the 3rd chapter which describes his background. Though I have been his fan for 17 years, this chapter includes the richest information about Kapustin’s musical trajectories that I have never heard of. Every story that I read in this chapter strongly made me recognize that he was musically so mature already when he was a very young kid.
Every story in this book is combined with Mr. Kawakami’s personal experiences about his connection with Kapustin in the form of essays, which will also amuse the readers by enabling to trace Mr. Kawakami’s visits to Kapustin’s home, and journey into his music.
Unfortunately the book is currently written in Japanese and released only in Japan. I hope this will come out in other countries too, and I believe the book is worth it.
By the way, I realized that one of the Kapustin’s scores that used to be released in Japan now costs over 80,000 yen (about 800 US dollars!) for a second-hand in Amazon market place. So this book might be rare and expensive too in the future by any chance. So my suggestion is… as long as you are a fan of Kapustin and can read Japanese, grab this book now!!
